MCALLEN — Golden Boy Promotions and Solo Boxeo will be bringing more heat to the Valley on June 18th at the McAllen Convention Center.
Anthony Cavazos, president of Cavazos Boxing, said that this fight card is hot and the fans that attend the event are definitely getting a treat. “This is an action packed fight card and Golden Boy Promotions will be bringing the heat come June 18th,” said Cavazos. “On that night fight fans will be able to see some of these young prospects who have the ability of becoming future world champions as well as some local favorites.”
In the main event, Golden Boy prospects Luis Ramos Jr. and Jermell Charlo will highlight the card and Weslaco native Omar Figueroa, another Golden Boy fighter with a perfect 9-0 record, will face Mexico’s Julian Rodriguez (18-18) in the co-main event.
Headlining the under card will be Lyford native and WBC Latino Cruiserweight champion Eric Molina (13-1) who will defend his title for the first time against Chris Thomas (17-11-2) and former WBA super bantamweight champion Nestor Garza (41-4) of Reynosa will face Harlingen’s Steve Almaraz. Also appearing on the under card will be Raul Tovar of Mission against Brownsville’s Jose Trevino and Juan Manuel Lopez of Weslaco who will face Edinburg’s Richard Flores.
Two females will duke it out in the opening bout of the night as Brownsville’s Maria Rodriguez will square off against Yvette McCullar of Killeen.
“I will go on the record and say this is probably one of the biggest show in Texas Golden Boy has put on,” said Cavazos. “Where else can you see professional boxing at its best but in the Rio Grande Valley. This is kind of like bringing Las Vegas style fights to the area.”
“When you throw in Golden Boy prospects Luis Ramos, Jermell Charlo, and the return of Omar Figueroa to the Valley, this card already has the makings of being hard hitting. However, fans will also get to see the return of former world champion Nestor Garza and Eric Molina’s first title defense. Also some of the top local prospects in the Valley will appear on the card and Solo Boxeo is returning to the Valley as well. The McAllen Convention Center is going to be scorching hot come the 18th.”

BROWNSVILLE — Lyford native Eric Molina has already accomplished so much in the boxing ring in his three-year tenure in the industry.
After losing to Ashanti Jordan in his pro debut in 2007, Molina has reeled off 13 straight victories with 10 of them coming by way of knockout. Also Molina has captured the Texas State Cruiserweight title, the WBC Latino title, and just recently became ranked 19th in the world amongst Cruiserweights in the WBC.
But Molina can now add another accomplishment outside of the ring as well.
Molina graduated from the University of Texas at Brownsville this past Saturday with a Bachelors of Arts in Education and said that he is so glad that the long haul to getting his degree is finally over.
“All of the hard work and dedication has finally paid off,” said Molina. “All the long days of school, work, and training were definitely worth it.”
“There were many days that I wondered if this is what I really wanted to do. I would wake up at 5:00 a.m. and go for a five-mile run. Then I would go to school until 3:00 in the afternoon and work from 4:00 to midnight. Then I would train from midnight until 3:00 in the morning. Now granted this was only one day a week, but I can promise you there were days I did not want to go to school. But the sleepless nights and all of the stressful days were taken away when I got that piece of paper in my hands.”
Now Molina gets prepared to defend his title in the upcoming Golden Boy card coming to the Valley on June 18th at the McAllen Convention Center. Anthony Cavazos, Molina’s promoter, said that Eric has been training hard in preparation for this fight and the combination of graduating and his ranking moving up has motivated him to put on a great performance.
“I think that between him graduating and being ranked 19th in the world has really motivated him for this fight,” said Cavazos. “Eric is really looking forward to defending his title on the 18th of June and what a better way to cap off two great accomplishments than to fight on a Golden Boy card and on Solo Boxeo.”
“I am so proud of what Eric has accomplished and let’s just say that there are some big things coming his way.”
Molina said that he is going to try to find a place for his degree` but feels it will not be a problem.
“I will make some room on my wall for my degree right beside my belts,” said Molina.

MCALLEN — Local boxing promoter Anthony Cavazos is about to add another piece to his already impressive resume.

Cavazos, president of Cavazos Boxing, will once again team up with Golden Boy Promotions for the third time and put on a show at the McAllen Convention Center on June 18th.

“I am excited about teaming up with Golden Boy again and am proud and privileged that they want to work with me,” said Cavazos. “ I feel like family with them and there is a lot of respect between myself and Golden Boy and cant wait till fight night.”

Not only is Golden Boy making their triumphant return to the Valley, but so is the boxing television segment “Solo Boxeo Tecate“ after being off of the air for quite some time. “Solo Boxeo Tecate is coming back to television after being gone for a while and teaming up with Golden Boy for this show is just icing on the cake, “said Cavazos.

Cavazos is currently working with Golden Boy representatives on the fight card and he assures the boxing fans that it is going to be a loaded one at that.

“This card is going to be huge for the Valley and one that fans will remember for quite some time,” said Cavazos. “Golden Boy fighter and welterweight prospect Jermell Charlo of Houston will be featured in the main event and local Golden Boy prospect Omar Figueroa will make his triumphant return to the Valley as well after fighting all over the country for quite some time now.”

“Also, the WBC Latino Cruiserweight Champion Eric Molina, who is currently ranked 19th in the world in the WBC, will defend his title in a special attraction of the evening and former WBC Featherweight champion Nestor Garza will make his return to the ring also. Local favorites Raul Tovar and Manuel “Suavecito” Lopez will also be a part of this heavy hitting card. This is one heck of a line-up and a great opportunity for some local fighters to get exposure on national television.”

Tickets will go on sale the first week of May and can be purchased at www.eztixx.com
